The Best Weed Control

You love your garden. It is in full bloom and you are enjoying the bright beautiful flowers, but then you catch sight of something far less appealing, a weed. A gardener’s worst enemy, weeds are invasive and an eye sore, but there are some precautions you can take to rid your beautiful garden of these atrocious monstrosities.

Mulching With Newspaper

Weed Prevention is the best method. When beginning to plant your garden or as the flowers begin to pop through the freshly thawed winter ground, put down newspaper in layers of one to two sheets and fully cover the entire surface with mulch. Newspaper is biodegradable and acts as a barrier between the sun and the weeds that may be trying to rear their ugly heads.

Leave Soil Alone

One mistake most people make when weeding is turning the dirt.  What most people don’t know, though, is every inch of your garden is covered in weed seeds.  Only those in the top couple inches can get enough sunlight in order to grow, but when you stir up the dirt you are bringing new seeds to the surface, making your life harder. So when you are weeding and digging, try to disrupt as little dirt as possible in order to keep those weeds in check.

Weed Your Garden When It’s Wet

The best time to weed your flowers is right after a good rainstorm. The rain seeps down into the ground and loosens the roots so you are able to be the most effective. You want to get as much of the root system as possible in order to ensure they don’t come back.

Cut Off The Head

Off with its head! If your weed problem gets out of control, you can always just cut off the heads of the weeds, preventing them from releasing seeds and adding to the problem. The sound of the snap of the stem is also a very satisfying sound as your slice through the plant.

Water Only The Plant

Something else to keep in mind, only water what you want to grow.  Don’t set a sprinkler to water a large area of the garden. Weeds are plants too. They need water and sunlight in order to survive. When you are watering your garden, try to do it by hand so you can spot water only the plants you want.
